Part of the Chemainus Legends Set, this is a valuable resource for primary teachers wanting to integrate First Nations awareness into their classrooms. The two stories are simply told with many full page pen and ink illustrations facing the pages of text. Each story introduces a few Coast Salish words and much about the culture of the people.
This teacher’s guide contains a theme web (suggestions for planning an integrated thematic unit based on the story), pre-reading activities, cultural background information and activities, teaching strategies, extended activities and related resources for each story. Many of the pages are designed for photocopying for student use. The strategies could be interchanged or used with other stories in a literature based unit. These activities have all been used successfully in Brenda and Donna’s classrooms. For the complete set see Chemainus Legends Set, Social Studies Menu.
